Kendrick was born in Portland, Maine, the daughter of Janice and William K. Kendrick. She is of English, Irish, and Scottish descent. Her older brother is actor Michael Cooke Kendrick, who appeared in the 2000 movie Looking for an Echo. Anna attended Deering High School in her hometown.

Kendrick started her career at the early age of 10 when she took a bus from Portland, Maine, to New York City so that she could attend auditions. Kendrick's first acting role was as Dinah in the Broadway production High Society in the summer of 1998 when she was 12 years old, a role for which she won the Theatre World Award. She was also nominated for a Drama Desk Award and Tony Award. The Tony Award nomination made her the third-youngest Tony Award nominee ever. Anna went on to perform in a number of other productions, including A Little Night Music, playing Fredrika Armfeldt in the New York City Opera production. A little later, she made her motion picture debut in the 2003 comedy musical Camp. For her portrayal of Fritzi Wagner in this film, she received a nomination for the Independent Spirit Awards Best Debut Performance.

In 2007, Anna had a role in the film Rocket Science, in which she played Ginny Ryerson, a fast-talking high school debater. Later that year, Anna tried out for the role of Jessica Stanley in the film adaptation of Twilight, a 2008 film based on the initial book of the novel series by Stephenie Meyer. Anna had intended to do a mix-and-match audition with various actors, but she was too sick and had to leave prematurely. Fortunately for her, she was able to come back for a later session and won the role of Jessica. Kendrick reprised this role in the first three Twilight sequels.

Anna's theater singing experience gave her the chance to star in The Marc Pease Experience (2009), where she appears as a high school senior involved in musical theater. She also appeared in the 2009 film Elsewhere, in which she plays her first lead character, a girl whose best friend disappears. She also appeared in the film Up in the Air, based on Walter Kirn's 2001 novel of the same name. For her role in Up in the Air, the National Board of Review named her Best Supporting Actress, and she also picked up nominations from numerous other awards including The Screen Actors Guild, The Golden Globes, and the Academy Awards.

Kendrick played Stacey Pilgrim, the sister of the lead character. In 2010, she appeared in LCD Soundsystem's music video "Pow Pow" as a "shape-shifter" who gathers "the souls of wicked men". In October 2010, she attended the 2010 Top Glamour Awards based in Mexico where she won the award for "Best International Actress".

In 2011, she was featured in the dramatic comedy 50/50, and reprised her role as Jessica Stanley in The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn. In 2012, she played Rosie in the film version of the baby book What to Expect When You're Expecting. She also lent her voice to the character Courtney in the stop-motion animated movie ParaNorman. She starred in Pitch Perfect as Beca, a rebellious college student who discovers her voice in her school's all-women a cappella group, and she is also featured on the film's soundtrack. Kendrick was also in the police drama End of Watch, as Janet. In 2012 she appeared in the thriller The Company You Keep.
