Anna Kendrick



Anna Kendrick was born August 9, 1985. She is a singer and American actress. She shot to fame after her performance as Natalie Keener in the movie Up in the Air (2009), for which she was nominated for the Academy Awards, BAFTA, Golden Globe, and Screen Actors Guild Awards for Best Supporting Actress. She portrayed Dinah Lord in the Broadway production High Society (1998), for which she was nominated for a Tony Award. Other notable roles include Fritzi Wagner in Camp (2003), Jessica Stanley in The Twilight Saga (2008-11), Stacey Pilgrim in Scott Pilgrim vs. the World (2010), Beca Mitchell in Pitch Perfect (2012), and Janet in End of Watch (2012).

Kendrick was born in the state of Maine, the daughter of William K and Janice Kendrick. She is of English, Irish, and Scottish descent. She has an older brother, actor Michael Cooke Kendrick. He appeared in the 2000 production Looking for an Echo. Anna attended Deering High School in her hometown.

Kendrick started her career at the age of 10 when she took a bus from her hometown to New York City so that she could attend auditions. Kendrick's initial role was as Dinah in the Broadway production High Society in August 1998 when she was 12 years old, a role for which she was awarded the Theatre World Award. She was also nominated for a Drama Desk Award and Tony Award. The Tony Award nomination made her the third-youngest Tony Award nominee ever. Kendrick went on to perform in a number of other stage productions, including the musical A Little Night Music, in which she played Fredrika Armfeldt in the New York City Opera production. Afterwards, she made her motion picture debut in the 2003 comedy musical Camp. Due to her portrayal of Fritzi Wagner in this film, she was nominated for the Independent Spirit Awards Best Debut Performance.

In 2007, Anna had a role in the film Rocket Science, in which she portrayed Ginny Ryerson, a fast-talking high school debater. Although she said she found the role intimidating and challenging after watching an actual national collegiate debate, her performance was given high accolades by critics and she was nominated for the Independent Spirit award for Best Supporting Actress. Later that year, she auditioned for the part of Jessica Stanley in the film adaptation of Twilight, a 2008 film based on the initial book of the series by Stephenie Meyer. Anna had intended to do auditions with various actors, but was too ill and had to leave prematurely. Fortunately for her, she was able to come back for a later session and was given the role of Jessica. Kendrick reprised this role in the first three Twilight sequels.

Kendrick's theater singing experience gave her the chance to land a role in The Marc Pease Experience (2009), where she appears as a high school senior involved in musical theater. She also appeared in the 2009 film Elsewhere, in which she portrays her first lead character, a girl whose best friend disappears. She also appeared in the movie Up in the Air, based on Walter Kirn's 2001 novel of the same name. For her performance in Up in the Air, the National Board of Review named her Best Supporting Actress, and she also picked up nominations from numerous other awards including The Screen Actors Guild, The Golden Globes, and the Academy Awards.

Kendrick reprised her role as Jessica Stanley in The Twilight Saga: Eclipse. She was featured in Edgar Wright's rendition of the graphic novel Scott Pilgrim, titled Scott Pilgrim vs. the World. Kendrick played Stacey Pilgrim, the sister of the lead character. In 2010, she appeared in LCD Soundsystem's video "Pow Pow" as a "shape-shifter" who gathers "the souls of wicked men". In October 2010, she attended the 2010 Top Glamour Awards based in Mexico where she won the award for "Best International Actress".

In 2011, she was featured in the dramatic comedy 50/50, and reprised her her portrayal of Jessica Stanley in The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn. In 2012, she was Rosie in the film version of the baby book What to Expect When You're Expecting. She also lent her voice to the character Courtney in the animated film ParaNorman. She starred in Pitch Perfect as Beca, a rebellious college student who discovers her voice in her school's female a cappella group, and she is also featured on the film's soundtrack. Kendrick also appeared in the police drama End of Watch, as Janet. In 2012 she appeared in the political thriller The Company You Keep.

In 2013, Anna scored a hit song with "Cups (When I'm Gone)" from the film Pitch Perfect which became a No. 2 hit on Billboard's Adult Pop chart. Anna also hosted SNL on April 5, 2014 with musical guest Pharrell.
